If you’re like us, you REALLY missed the pow wow circuit when COVID-19 hit, so seeing things start up again this summer was amazing. Whether it was seeing old friends or dancing or hitting up the food vendors (ALL the Indian tacos! <3), we had the best time. Don’t get us wrong: we loved seeing all the kids in their regalia lighting up TikTok, but it’s not the same thing as being there in person!
With that in mind, we wanted to share some of the big feelings that we loved this summer. If it’s been a while since you’ve been on the circuit or you’ve never been to a Pow Wow before (there’s always a first time, and it’s exciting!), here are some quick tips for how to enjoy yourself and make the most of your Pow Wow experience once things start up again next season!
Dos
- DO have fun and enjoy the energy!!
- DO pay attention to the Master of Ceremonies for important info about timing, when to sit and stand, etc.
- DO get ready to support the food vendors and artisans who have worked so hard to make the event a success ?
- DO get to know the differences between Pow Wows; some are traditional and some are competition-based
- DO bring the kids in your life! Introduce them to a very special part of their culture while making some great memories ?
Don’ts
- DON’T bring any prohibited things (e.g., drugs, alcohol, etc.)
- DON’T take pictures during Grand Entry, Flag songs, or Honour songs
- DON’T take pics of dancers or performers without asking first
- DON’T forget your tobacco for Elders or dancers (especially before asking a question), and…
- DON’T be afraid to ask questions, especially if it’s your first time attending!
Happy dancing!!
